iScrub by Esquire Innovations - While the product removes metadata from documents, it focuses on proprietary options that make it quite unique. For example, rather than creating PDF documents iScrub has “Metasealant” which creates an MS Word document that cannot be edited or copied from and only allows the person receiving the document to view it. With Adobe’s PDF format being the undisputed market leader this option needs to be carefully considered by firms.

iScrub recently added a printable report to show the Metadata in a document. iScrub does have a centralized administration feature that allows firms to establish and control the metadata removal settings. iScrub allows different configurations for internal and external e-mail recipients. There are up to five levels of scrubbing which can be beneficial to practice areas.

iScrub cleans Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. It also works with Outlook, GroupWise, Lotus Notes, DOCSOpen, iManage and Worldox. Licenses are available for either single users or in increments of 10 seats.

Metadata Scrubber by BEC Legal Systems. The Metadata Scrubber can clean Word and Excel files but not PowerPoint files. An add-in (at extra cost) creates a PDF copy of Word, Excel or PowerPoint files.

We discovered this program after our shoot-out was completed and have not had an opportunity to thoroughly review this program. ezClean by KKL - The 25 seat license requirement and e-mail only support policy (limited systems running Windows XP and Office 2003/XP) take this program out of the running for most readers. ezClean integrates with Imanage, DM5 and PowerDocs Document Management Systems. It does not integrate with Worldox.

Overall we felt that this tool was the least user-friendly program that we evaluated. While it did clean all of the major Metadata elements from the documents we tested the program seemed far less user-friendly than the other programs in our shoot-out.

The program works with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and integrates with Outlook. The company only provides e-mail support and only supports their software if it installed on a Windows XP system running Office 2003 or XP. ezClean is licensed in a minimum of 25 seats with prices starting at $20 per seat.

Out-Of-Sight by Softwise - A demo version is available by request through the company's website. We made several requests for a demo version but the company did not responded to our e-mails.
